Commit every day that you work

This is a new motto that I will be keeping close to my heart from now on — Committing every day that I work.

I recently read a blog post about shipping something every day. Initially, I thought, "How does this make any sense?" How could one possibly be able to ship new stuff every day? However, I soon realized that I was not looking at the big picture.

The blog post mentions how we should ship something every day that we work. Whether it be a major feature or a minor bug fix. It just needs to be something that we can show. A few reasons mentioned were dopamine rush of shipping code and the git commit streak looks good on github profile. Out of them, there were a few claims that stood out to me.

At my previous internship, we used to have virtual standups 2/3 times a week where we meet with the team and talk about what each person did. Since it was a remote internship, I thought this really helped to bond with the team and see what each member has been working on. This also helped us communicate better with roadblocks we each had and solve each other's problems.

The regular rhythm of sharing progress and staying accountable to the team made me realize how powerful daily momentum can be. Furthermore, I thought this really impacted me about how I view life in general. During school, I was always locked in on getting good grades and all but ever since I graduated, I've been trying to search for my purpose — my calling. Some days, I would just be a hikikomori, without getting anything done. It takes me forever to work on my portfolio and even start this blog. But I pulled through with the goal of satisfaction of getting something done and here I am.

At the time of this post, I've finished my portfolio website and trying to start blogging so that I have something to commit every day. In the long run, I'm sure this will help me out both in terms of work and life as well.
